Isaiah 60:1-6 Psalm 72: 1-2,7-8,10-11,12-13
Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6 Matthew 2: 1-12
Today, we celebrate the marvelous manifestation of Jesus, the Light of the World, to the Three Kings.
The Kings, also known as the Wise Men and Magi, were astrologers. As stargazers a star beckoned to them to follow it. The risk to do so was great! Probably some people supported them while others ridiculed them as they left family and familiar surroundings to follow the star. Presumably their journey was grueling; most likely they encountered obstacles along the way but they persevered.
Their journey led them to a stable in Bethlehem. There they were filled with great joy when they saw "… the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage". The light of the star in the sky had led them to a stable where the Light of the World was made manifest to them!
These Magi, non-Jews, recognized the Kings of the Jews. They worshipped him and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. They not only, gave him their best gifts but also gave him their hearts. In turn, they were enlightened with love, wisdom, truth and light. As Light-bearers they returned home by a different route to bring the Light of the World into the dark areas of their lives and environment.
The Magi serve as role models for us in our journey as we seek the "Light of the World."
Search for your star! Find and focus on the light in your life. It may be a person, a book, a star in the sky, or a quiet place in a church or in the woods. Whatever or whoever it is, find it, follow it, persevere and let it lead you to the "Light of the World."
Like the Magi when you encounter Christ, the Light of the World, may you too be filled with great joy and rejoice. Present your gifts and yourself to God. Hold nothing back! Let your epiphany experience change you. Perhaps you, too, may have to take a different route in an attitude, a habit, your words or a relationship.
The Magi followed a star, found the Christ Child, and were transformed. They continued on their journey joyfully and bravely proclaiming their truth.
Today's feast challenges you and me to follow our star and be transformed by the Light of the World. We are being called out of our darkness, to leave our comfort zones as did the Magi, to be bearers of the Light of Christ through our words and by our witness.
True there is much darkness and evil in the world, but there is Light. The Light has come! Do not let the darkness overcome the Light! Be a Light-bearer to defeat the darkness.
Let the words of Isaiah in the first reading give you joy and courage. "Rise up in splendor. Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you."
PRAYER:
Loving God, Your Light has come into the world.
Shine through me so your Light may overcome the darkness within me and in my environment.
